There has never been a time that American educators have had a better opportunity to make a lasting impact on our nation. They stand on the front lines of where the global economic downturn meets the average citizen. We say to them that their children thrive in our world; we promise the future will be bright. And these are not vain words. Indeed, the promise is bright.
As educators we are able to inspire the curiosity and imagination that are the hallmarks of American society. From the beginning our nation has been pulled together by the belief that things can always get better when individuals are willing to work hard, dream big, and make the temporary sacrifices necessary for long-term gains. There is no better example of this than in the daily work of learning in America's public schools.
We can no longer rest on the accomplishments of the past, or hang our hats on learning that has already happen. We must push forward into higher levels of creative thinking that ignite the passions of the human spirit for change. We must leave the over-focus on basic knowledge and standards behind and set our sights on the heavens of discovery. What an excellent priveledge and responsibility we have, right now, to give hope and inspiration for years to come.
